Sleeping Duck vs Sleep Republic

Sleep Republic vs Sleeping Duck

One is built around 1,850 pocket springs and a spinal-health endorsement. The other lets each side of the bed have its own firmness. They score 8.9 and 8.8 — and the right answer has almost nothing to do with that.

You want the strongest support and edge scores we have recorded in this price bracket, the longest trial of the two, and you already know roughly what firmness suits you.

You and your partner disagree about firmness, or you genuinely do not know what suits you and want to change it after delivery rather than guess before it.

These two are not really competing

They land within a tenth of a point of each other, which makes the scores almost useless for choosing between them. The question that decides it is whether you need to change the firmness after the mattress arrives.

Sleeping Duck is built entirely around that. You pick medium, firm, or half-and-half — a different firmness on each side — and if you get it wrong the company posts you replacement foam pads. Our review scores it 9.8 for customisation — the top of our scale — and no other mattress we cover has a score on that axis at all, because no other mattress does it.

Sleep Republic does not do this at all. Our own review lists “anyone wanting adjustable firmness” under the reasons to skip it. It is one mattress, medium-firm, and it is very good at being that: 1,850 pocket springs across five zones, an Australian Spinal Research Foundation endorsement, and the highest support and edge-support scores of the two.

So if adjustability is why you are reading this, Sleep Republic cannot replace Sleeping Duck and no amount of spring count changes that. If it is not, the rest of this page matters.

Where each one actually wins

Five sub-scores are common to both reviews. Sleep Republic takes three, Sleeping Duck takes two, and the two each brand does not share — motion isolation and customisation — are not comparable, so they are left out rather than fudged into a total.

Sleep Republic Sleeping Duck

The gaps that matter are value and support. Sleeping Duck’s 7.8 for value is not a criticism of the mattress — it is what happens on the price you actually pay. At list price these two are eleven dollars apart. Sleep Republic is discounted almost permanently and Sleeping Duck very rarely is, so in practice the gap runs to roughly $400 — and that is the number our value scores reflect. You are paying for the adjustment, and it is worth it exactly as often as you use it.

What only Sleeping Duck does

Two people, two firmnesses, one mattress. Nothing else we review solves that without buying two singles and zipping them together. If one of you sleeps on your side and the other on their stomach, this is the product built for your bed, and the 9.8 customisation score is us saying so.

What only Sleep Republic does

An Australian Spinal Research Foundation endorsement, 1,850 individually wrapped springs across five zones, and 150 nights to decide instead of 100. If the reason you are shopping is a back that hurts rather than a partner who disagrees, that is the more relevant set of credentials.

The honest problems

Sleep Republic

No adjustability whatsoever — if the firmness is wrong for you, your only option is the return. Cooling is its weakest axis at 8.2, which is worth weighing in a Queensland summer. It is designed in Melbourne but manufactured in China, and the brand states that openly rather than hiding behind “Australian owned”. And if you want a plush surface rather than a supportive one, the standard model is the wrong Sleep Republic — the LUXE exists for that.

Sleeping Duck

It is the more expensive mattress in practice — the list prices are eleven dollars apart, but Sleep Republic is discounted almost permanently and this is not — with a shorter trial (100 nights against 150) and a shorter warranty (10 years against 12). Its value score of 7.8 is among the lowest we have given. And the adjustment system only earns its premium if you actually use it — plenty of owners set it once and never touch it again, and those buyers paid for a feature they did not need.

Common questions

Is Sleeping Duck worth the extra money?

Only if you use the adjustment. For a couple who genuinely disagree about firmness, or a buyer who has been wrong about firmness before, it is the cheapest way to stop guessing — the alternative is returning a mattress. For a single sleeper who already knows they like medium-firm, you are paying a few hundred dollars for a feature you will set once. Note that the two list within eleven dollars of each other; the gap is Sleep Republic’s near-permanent discount, so check both prices on the day.

Which is better for back pain?

Sleep Republic, on the credentials rather than on our opinion: it scores 9.5 for support against 9.0, and it carries the Australian Spinal Research Foundation endorsement, which Sleeping Duck does not. Both are hybrids with real spring systems, so neither is a bad answer — but if back pain is the reason you are shopping, one of them has an independent body’s name attached to it.

Which is better for couples?

Sleeping Duck, and it is not close if you disagree about firmness — that is the one problem it was built to solve. If you agree about firmness, the question becomes motion transfer, and Sleep Republic’s 1,850 individually wrapped springs handle that well enough that we score it 9.0 for motion isolation.

Is either one Australian made?

Neither, on the strict test. Sleep Republic is designed in Melbourne and manufactured in China, and says so. Sleeping Duck is a Melbourne company whose foam is made in Australia, but it does not publish a manufacturing location for the finished mattress. If Australian manufacture is the deciding factor, see our Australian made guide — three of the twelve brands we review qualify, and neither of these is one of them.

Can you try both?

Yes, and it is the sane approach at this price. Sleep Republic gives you 150 nights, Sleeping Duck 100. Both refund rather than credit. Buy the one you think you want first, and take the trial seriously — comfort problems usually show up in week three or four, not on the first night.
BestMattressAustralia may earn a commission if you buy through our Sleep Republic link, at no extra cost to you. We earn nothing from Sleeping Duck and it is linked anyway, because a comparison you can only act on in one direction is not a comparison. Commission never affects a score or a ranking — both scores here come from the same published model, built from verified owner reviews, independent awards, published specifications and warranty terms.
