The best mattress for every kind of sleeper
There is no single best mattress, only the best one for how you sleep. Each pick below is the top pick in our full guide for that need, apart from the value hybrid, the only full pocket-spring hybrid in our under-$1,000 guide. Follow the guide link for the reasoning and the runners-up.
Yinahla Premier Luxe
Why: Zoned springs firm up under the hips and soften at the shoulders, so the spine stays level. Bedbuyer’s Best Back Care Mattress 2026, endorsed by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, and backed by a 20-year warranty.
The catch: It costs several times what most mattresses on this page do.
Luxara Platinum
Why: A 10cm pillow top over 2,020 springs lets the shoulder and hip settle while the springs hold the spine straight. Handcrafted in Australia. Code BESTMATTRESS100 takes $100 off.
The catch: A 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial, both shorter than the Yinahla’s and the Sleep Firm’s.
Sleeping Duck
Why: You choose firm, and if it turns out wrong you swap the firmness pads rather than return the mattress. Each side of the bed can be set separately.
The catch: A premium price for a 10-year warranty.
Emma Comfort
Why: Our top cooling pick: breathable Airgocell foam over pocket springs, and a 150-night trial to find out whether it suits you.
The catch: Weak edge support, and our review does not recommend it long-term for anyone over 100kg.
Sleep Firm Ultra
Why: Ultra-firm foam over ultra-firm pocket springs, 9.5/10, with the highest edge-support score in our heavy-sleeper guide. Bedbuyer’s Best Firm Mattress 2026.
The catch: Far too firm for side sleepers, and extra weight makes that worse. Heavier side sleepers should start with the Yinahla.
Sleep Firm
Why: A genuine 9/10 firm mattress, made in Melbourne, with a 150-night trial and a 15-year warranty.
The catch: Most side sleepers will find it too hard.
Sleep Republic LUXE
Why: A pillow top over seven support zones, and the highest-fit pick in our older sleepers guide.
The catch: The dearest of Sleep Republic’s three models.
Koala
Why: The highest-scored mattress we review that sells for under $1,000. The comfort layer flips between medium-firm and firm, and its foam absorbs a partner’s movement well.
The catch: All-foam, so heavier sleepers should look at springs, and the price is under $1,000 only while Koala’s standing discount holds.
Origin Hybrid
Why: A seven-zone pocket-spring hybrid priced with the foam mattresses rather than the other hybrids, with a 15-year warranty.
The catch: Its edge support is the weakest in our heavy-sleeper guide, and some owners report early sagging.
All 14 mattresses, ranked by our score
The same mattresses in one list, highest score first. A high score means strong evidence of quality, not a fit for everyone: the Sleep Firm, for one, is a 9/10 firm mattress that most side sleepers would find too hard.

How to choose a mattress in Australia
- Start with how you sleep. Side sleepers need somewhere for the shoulder and hip to sink, so they usually do best on a softer or pillow-top mattress. Back sleepers suit medium-firm. Stomach sleepers need firm, so the hips do not drop below the spine.
- Then your weight. Over about 100kg, choose pocket springs over all-foam. Springs recover night after night; foam compresses, and the heavier you are, the sooner it shows. Our heavy sleepers guide goes through it.
- Check the trial. Most people take two to three weeks to get used to a new mattress, so a trial under 100 nights leaves little time to decide. The trials here run from 30 nights (Ergoflex) to 150, and the rules behind them differ more than the numbers: see our mattress trials and warranties guide.
- Read the warranty, not just its length. Most cover sagging only past a stated depth, commonly 25mm, and only on a proper base. Photograph the mattress flat on the day it arrives.
- Get the size right. A Queen gives each of two sleepers 76.5cm, narrower than a single bed. See our mattress sizes guide.
- Time the purchase. Most brands discount for much of the year, so a “sale” price is not always a low one. Our live price tracker shows the lowest price we have recorded for each mattress.
How we pick and score
We do not lab-test mattresses or sleep on them. Each score comes from verified owner reviews, independent awards, published specifications and warranty terms, and the overall on every review is the average of the sub-scores shown beside it.
Some brands pay us a commission when you buy through our links. That never changes a score, a rank or a pick on this page; see our affiliate disclosure.
Common questions
What is the best mattress in Australia in 2026?
On our scores, the Luxara Platinum, Sleep Republic LUXE and Yinahla Premier Luxe share the top place, with the Sleep Firm and Sleep Republic close behind. But the best mattress is the one that suits how you sleep, which is what the picks above answer.
How long should a mattress trial be?
At least 100 nights. Owners commonly take two to three weeks to adjust to a new mattress, and longer to a firm one, so a short trial can end before you know. The Yinahla, Emma, Sleep Republic and Sleep Firm offer 150 nights; Ergoflex offers 30.
Is a hybrid or a foam mattress better?
Neither for everyone. Pocket-spring hybrids hold up better under weight, sleep cooler and have stronger edges. All-foam mattresses cost less, and the good ones absorb a partner’s movement well. If you weigh over 100kg, choose springs.
When is the best time to buy a mattress in Australia?
The big sales are Click Frenzy in mid-November, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Boxing Day, and the end of the financial year in June. Because many brands discount most of the year, compare any sale price with the lowest price on our price tracker before you buy, and see our guide to the best time to buy a mattress.
