Sleep Republic vs Koala: springs or foam, and which one holds up

Australia’s best-known mattress against the one with the highest support score we’ve given. They are built on opposite principles, they cost within $80 of each other, and the right answer depends almost entirely on your weight and whether you sit on the edge of the bed.

Sleep Republic is a pocket-spring hybrid; Koala is all-foam with a flippable comfort layer. That single difference explains most of what follows.

The four things we score both on

Our review pages score each mattress on the factors that matter for that product, which means the two lists are not identical — Koala carries scores for delivery speed and environmental credentials that Sleep Republic does not, and Sleep Republic carries cooling and value scores that Koala does not. These four are the ones both are scored on, so these are the only ones worth putting head to head.

Sleep Republic Koala

Read that honestly and it says: they are the same mattress for comfort, near enough the same for motion, and Sleep Republic is meaningfully better at holding weight up. The 2.4-point gap on edge support is the largest single difference between them and the one most people will physically notice.

Sleep Republic mattress construction layers
Sleep Republic’s pocket springs are zoned — firmer under the hips, softer under the shoulders — which is where the 9.5 support score comes from.

Springs against foam

Sleep Republic is a hybrid. Individually wrapped pocket springs sit under comfort foam, zoned so the section under your hips resists more than the section under your shoulders. Springs push back along their whole length, which is why the mattress holds its shape at the perimeter and why heavier sleepers do not sink through it.

Koala is all-foam. There are no springs at all — layers of foam with a flippable top layer that gives you a firmer side and a softer side. Foam supports by compressing, and compression at the edge of a mattress has nothing to push against, which is the whole explanation for the 6.8 edge score.

Neither is inherently better. Foam isolates movement slightly more completely, and Koala’s 9.2 there is genuinely excellent. But foam also softens with body heat and with time in a way springs do not, and that difference compounds over the years you own the thing.

Koala’s comfort layer flips to give a firmer or softer feel — the feature that makes it the safer buy if you genuinely do not know what you want.

Why edge support decides this for a lot of people

Edge support sounds like a specification nobody buys on, and then you sit on the side of the bed to put your socks on and the mattress folds under you. On a Queen it also costs you usable surface: if the outer 10cm collapses when you roll onto it, two people are sharing a King Single’s worth of solid mattress.

Sleep Republic scores 9.2 here. Koala scores 6.8 — our second-lowest edge score across every mattress we cover. If you share the bed, if you are over about 90kg, or if you sit on the edge daily, this is the line that should decide it.

If you sleep alone, in the middle, and are lighter than average, it barely matters and the rest of the comparison is closer than the scores suggest.

The honest problems with each

Sleep Republic — sagging, and how warranty claims are handled

We earn a commission if you buy Sleep Republic and we still apply a downward adjustment to its score, because the owner reviews contain a pattern the headline 4.8 does not show: sagging reported between six and twenty-four months, which is well inside the warranty and well outside the 150-night trial.

The second half of the complaint matters more. Owners report warranty claims refused on technicalities, and returns requiring the buyer to find a charity to take the mattress themselves. A 12-year warranty is only worth what the company does when you use it.

Koala — the independent reviewer disagrees with the owners

Koala’s owner rating is 4.8 from 1,549 reviews, identical to Sleep Republic’s. But Bedbuyer, reviewing hands-on and independently, rates Koala 4.0 against Sleep Republic’s 4.8 — the widest gap between those two sources of any pair on this page.

Its Trustpilot rating is 3.4 from 56 reviews, against Sleep Republic’s 3.0 from 7 — a sample too small on Sleep Republic’s side to mean anything, so we have not used it in either score. The edge support figure is the concrete version of what the independent reviewer is reacting to.

Who should buy which

Buy Sleep Republic if you are heavier than average, you share the bed and use the full width of it, you sit on the edge to dress, or you simply prefer the feel of springs. The extra 30 nights of trial and two years of warranty are worth having, with the caveat above about how the warranty is administered.

Buy Koala if you do not know what firmness suits you and want to be able to change your mind without returning anything, you need a mattress delivered today rather than next week, or the carbon and materials story matters to you. It is also $79 cheaper, which is real but not decisive at this price.

Buy neither if you sleep hot. Sleep Republic scores 8.2 for cooling and Koala’s all-foam construction is warmer still — our hot sleepers guide has better options than either.

Common questions

Is Koala or Sleep Republic better for back pain?

Sleep Republic, on the numbers. It scores 9.5 for support against Koala’s 8.2, and it carries an Australian Spinal Research Foundation endorsement that Koala does not. Our back pain guide ranks it third overall; Koala is not in that top five.

Which is better for couples?

Closer than you would expect. Koala isolates movement marginally better — 9.2 against 9.0 — but Sleep Republic’s edge support means you can both use the full width of the bed rather than rolling towards the middle. For most couples the edge matters more than the 0.2.

Does Koala’s flippable layer actually work?

Yes, and it is the strongest argument for buying it. Two genuinely different feels in one mattress means a firmness mistake costs you five minutes rather than a return. It does not change the support underneath, so it will not fix the edge.

Is the $79 price difference worth anything?

Not on its own. At this price, 6% is inside the range either brand discounts by in a normal month — see our deals page. Decide on the mattress and buy whichever is discounted when you are ready.

How did you compare these without testing them?

We do not test mattresses and we do not claim to. Our scores come from analysis of verified owner reviews, independent hands-on reviewers, published specifications and the actual trial and warranty terms. Our methodology page sets out exactly what goes into a number.
Affiliate disclosure: we earn a commission if you buy Sleep Republic through the link on this page. We earn nothing from Koala — its links carry no tracking. Commission has never affected a score or a ranking, and Sleep Republic carries a downward adjustment on this very page for a failure pattern in its owner reviews.
