Quick Verdict

If you want a mattress that is genuinely firm rather than firm-ish, the Sleep Firm Mattress ($1,248 Queen) is the one. It is a true 9/10, it is handmade in Melbourne, and Bedbuyer named its Ultra model Australia’s Best Firm Mattress. Owners rate it 4.9 out of 5 from 228 reviews, and it carries a 150-night trial with a 15-year warranty.

Want to try firm before committing to it? The Ecosa TrueFirm ($878 Queen) flips between Firm and Extra Firm, so you can change your mind without returning anything. On a tight budget, the Origin Hybrid is $737 for a Queen today. And if firm is really about back support rather than hardness, read the section below on what the research actually found — it may point you to medium-firm instead.

Best for: Back and stomach sleepers, bodies over 90kg, and anyone whose current mattress sags in the middle.
Skip if: You sleep on your side — see our best mattress for side sleepers guide instead.

The Picks

#1 Sleep Firm — A True 9/10 Firm

#1
Sleep Firm MattressBest Genuinely Firm Mattress
4.9 / 5
$1,248 Queen 9/10 firmness 150-night trial 15 yr warranty Made in Melbourne

Most mattresses sold as firm in Australia land around 7 out of 10. Sleep Firm is the exception: it is built as a firm specialist rather than a medium with a firm label, and owners who buy it for that reason say it delivers. Bedbuyer, who test mattresses by hand, rated the Ultra model 9.5 out of 10 for firmness and named it their Best Firm Mattress.

It is a pocket-spring hybrid made by Chiropedic in Melbourne, which is also why the warranty runs 15 years rather than the usual 10. The 4.9 out of 5 comes from 228 verified owner reviews — a smaller pool than the big online brands, but an unusually consistent one.

Best for: Back and stomach sleepers, heavier bodies, and anyone who has found every “firm” mattress too soft
Skip if: You are under about 70kg or sleep on your side — at 9/10 it will not let your shoulder sink

#2 Ecosa TrueFirm — Firm and Extra Firm in One Mattress

#2
Ecosa TrueFirmBest If You Are Not Sure How Firm You Want
4.6 / 5
$878 Queen Flippable firm / extra firm 100-night trial 15 yr warranty

The TrueFirm solves the problem that makes buying a firm mattress risky: you cannot tell how firm you want until you have slept on one. It has a Firm side with some cushioning and an Extra Firm side that Ecosa describes as having minimal give and no sinking. If you choose wrong, you flip it rather than arrange a return.

Underneath both sides are natural Dunlop latex layers over high-gauge pocket springs in five zones. Bedbuyer ranks it third among Australian firm mattresses. Ecosa discounts it most of the time, against a full price of $1,170, so there is no reason to pay full price.

Best for: First-time firm buyers, and couples who disagree about how hard a bed should be
Skip if: You already know you want a true 9/10 — the Extra Firm side is firm, not extreme

#3 Origin Hybrid — Firm Support on a Budget

#3
Origin HybridBest Budget Firm Mattress
4.5 / 5
$737 Queen RRP $963 7–8/10 firmness 120-night trial 15 yr warranty

At $737 for a Queen, the Origin Hybrid costs far less than the Sleep Firm, and it is a real pocket-spring hybrid rather than a foam slab: seven zones, edge-to-edge springs, 27cm thick. It reads as firm-leaning medium-firm rather than properly firm, so it suits someone who wants support without the hardness.

The catch is that the price moves constantly. Our price bot reads it every day, so the figure above is today’s Queen price, not one from when we wrote this.

Best for: Spare rooms, first apartments, and anyone replacing a sagging mattress on a budget
Skip if: You weigh over 110kg — at this price the comfort layers are thinner than the picks above

#4 Sleep Republic ES — Firm Springs, Mid Price

#4
Sleep Republic ESBest Firm Hybrid Under $1,500
4.8 / 5
$1,008 Queen 7/10 firmness 150-night trial 12 yr warranty

The ES is the firmer, cheaper sibling in the Sleep Republic range, and Bedbuyer includes it in their firm mattress list. You get the same pocket-spring construction and the same 150-night trial as the flagship, with less comfort foam on top — which is exactly what you want if firm is the goal.

Our score for it is 8.8 out of 10, with edge support and motion isolation both at 9.0. It is the pick if you want firm support and a long trial without spending what the Sleep Firm costs.

Best for: Couples who want firm support and a genuinely long trial
Skip if: You want the full 9/10 — this is firm, not extra firm

#5 Yinahla Premier Firm — If Budget Is Not the Constraint

#5
Yinahla Premier FirmBest Premium Firm Mattress
4.9 / 5
$5,168 Queen Firm, zoned springs 150-night trial 20 yr warranty

Several times the price of our top pick, and we would not tell most readers to spend it. It earns a place because the construction is genuinely different: zoned pocket springs, Australian Spinal Research Foundation endorsement, a 20-year warranty, and Bedbuyer ranking it fifth among firm mattresses in the country.

Owners rate it 4.9 out of 5, but from only 99 reviews — the smallest pool on this page, so the rating carries less weight than Sleep Republic’s 2,157.

Best for: Chronic back pain where cheaper firm mattresses have already failed
Skip if: You are comparing on value — the Sleep Firm scores higher on firmness for a fraction of the price

Firm or Medium-Firm? The Research Says Something Unexpected

The belief that a firm mattress is better for your back is not supported by the best available trial. Kovacs and colleagues, publishing in The Lancet in 2003, randomised 313 adults with chronic lower back pain to either a firm mattress or a medium-firm one. The medium-firm group did better, on both pain and disability. A 2015 review of controlled trials reached the same conclusion: medium-firm surfaces best supported comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment.

So firm is not automatically better, and “the firmest mattress I can find” is rarely the right brief. What a firm mattress does well is stop heavier bodies sinking at the hips, which is a different problem from back pain in general. If you weigh over 90kg, sleep on your back or stomach, or are replacing a mattress that sags, firm is the right category. If you have back pain and weigh less than that, start at medium-firm — the Sleep Republic ES at 7/10 or the Ecosa TrueFirm on its softer side.

How Firm Is Firm? The Scale, and Who Lies About It

6 to 7 out of 10 — “medium-firm”

Where most mattresses marketed as firm actually sit, including the Koala Plus and the Sleep Republic ES. Supportive, still some give at the hips and shoulders.

8 out of 10 — “firm”

Noticeably hard on first contact. Most people adjust within two weeks; a few never do, which is what the trial period is for.

9 to 10 out of 10 — “extra firm”

Very little give anywhere. In Australia this is a small category: the Sleep Firm at 9/10 and the Extra Firm side of the Ecosa TrueFirm are the mainstream options.

Why the labels cannot be trusted

There is no standard behind the word. One brand’s firm is another’s medium. The only reliable checks are a published firmness number, what owners who bought it for firmness say afterwards, and a trial long enough to send it back.

Is the Koala Plus a Firm Mattress?

It is the question we get asked most often about firmness, so: not really. Koala rates the Plus at 6 to 7 out of 10 and it is flippable between medium-firm and firm, which puts its firmest side around where the Sleep Republic ES starts. It is $1,320 for a Queen, with a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty. If you want a Koala and you want support, it is the right one in their range — but if you are shopping specifically for firm, the picks above are firmer. Our full Koala review covers the range in detail.

Firm Mattresses by Size

Every mattress on this page comes in all standard Australian sizes, and the firmness does not change with the size — but the price does, and so does whether a firm mattress makes sense. In a King, two people rarely agree on firmness, which is the argument for the flippable Ecosa TrueFirm or for a split-firmness bed. In a Queen, the most-bought size in Australia, our picks run from $737 for the Origin Hybrid to $5,168 for the Yinahla Premier Firm. If you are still deciding on size, our Australian mattress sizes guide has the measurements and the room each one needs.

What We Left Off, and Why

Ergoflex 5G was ranked third on this page until this update. We have taken it off. It scores 6.6 out of 10 in our own review — the lowest score on this site — and the independent tester we cross-check against rates it 3.7 out of 5 and does not include it among Australia’s firm mattresses at all. Its trial is 30 nights where everything else here gives you 100 to 150. It is a dense memory foam mattress with genuine fans, and our Ergoflex review still covers it, but it does not belong in a list of the best firm mattresses.

Questions

Firm Mattress FAQ

Is a firm mattress better for back pain?

Not on the evidence. The randomised trial published in The Lancet found medium-firm mattresses produced better outcomes than firm ones for chronic lower back pain. Firm helps a specific case — heavier bodies, back and stomach sleepers, and replacing a sagging mattress — rather than back pain in general.

What is the firmest mattress you can buy in Australia?

Among mainstream bed-in-a-box brands, the Sleep Firm at 9 out of 10, with the Extra Firm side of the Ecosa TrueFirm close behind. Beyond that you are into orthopaedic and commercial bedding, which is usually sold in stores rather than online.

How long does it take to get used to a firm mattress?

Owner reports cluster around two to three weeks. That is the reason a trial shorter than 100 nights is a real disadvantage on a firm mattress: you may return it during the adjustment period rather than after it.

Will a firm mattress fix a sagging bed?

It will fix the sag, but check the base first. A slat base with gaps wider than 7cm will let any mattress dip between the slats, and most warranties exclude damage caused by an unsupported base.

Are firm mattresses better for heavier people?

Generally yes, because the weight concentrates at the hips and a softer mattress lets them drop below the line of the spine. Firmness alone is not enough though — spring gauge and edge support matter as much. Our guide for heavier sleepers goes through it properly.

What is the best medium-firm mattress in Australia?

Of the five here, the Sleep Republic ES (7/10) and the Origin Hybrid (7–8/10) sit at the medium-firm end, and the Ecosa TrueFirm on its Firm side is a step up from them. Medium-firm is also what the strongest trial evidence favours for back pain, as the research section above explains. For more options, see our back pain guide.

Which firm mattress is best for spine support?

Spinal alignment comes from keeping the hips level with the shoulders, which is the job of the support layer rather than the surface. Look for zoned support that is firmer under the hips: the Sleep Firm (five-zone springs), the Origin Hybrid (seven zones) and the Yinahla Premier Firm are all zoned. If back pain is why you are shopping, read the research section above first, because it points to medium-firm rather than firm.

What is the best firm Queen mattress?

Every price on this page is for a Queen. Our #1, the Sleep Firm, is $1,248 for a Queen today, and the Origin Hybrid is the budget firm pick at $737. All five come in a Queen, and the table at the top compares them side by side.

Is there an extra firm mattress in Australia?

Yes, but the choice is small. The Sleep Firm Ultra rates 9.5/10, the firmest mattress we cover, and the Ecosa TrueFirm has an Extra Firm side you can flip to, and back again, during its 100-night trial.
