Koala is Australia’s best-selling mattress for a reason — it does most things well without being the best at any single thing. The flippable Kloudcell comfort layer gives you medium-firm or firm options, the “zero disturbance” foam genuinely isolates partner movement, and the 4-hour metro delivery is the fastest in Australia. Add B-Corp certification, 1% for the Planet membership, and $4.9M+ donated to koala conservation, and you have a brand that’s easy to support. The trade-offs: it’s all-foam (no springs), edge support is average, it’s not the coolest sleeper, and at $1,249 Queen it’s not the cheapest option. Koala launched in 2015 in Sydney and became a household name almost overnight after their viral wine glass test video — someone jumped onto a Koala mattress next to a full glass of wine, and the wine didn’t spill. It demonstrated the mattress’s motion isolation and launched a brand that now has 50,000+ five-star reviews and is one of Australia’s most recognised consumer brands. Koala is a certified B-Corp (meeting rigorous social and environmental standards) and donates 1% of revenue to environmental causes through 1% for the Planet. They’ve donated over $4.9 million to koala and wildlife conservation.
Their current mattress range includes the SE (entry, ~$950 Queen), Koala Mattress (mid-range, this review, $1,249 Queen), Plus (advanced cooling, ~$1,490 Queen), Polar+ (ultimate cooling), and Luxe (premium, ~$1,990 Queen). This is what makes Koala unique among its price competitors. The top comfort layer can be flipped to choose between medium-firm (softer side up) or firm (firmer side up). It takes about 5 minutes — unzip the cover, flip the layer, zip back up. This gives you 2 firmness options in one mattress. Not as granular as Ecosa (3 settings) or Sleeping Duck (5+), but simpler and quicker to adjust.
Koala’s proprietary foam technology. Unlike memory foam (slow-sinking), Kloudcell is responsive — it bounces back quickly, making it easy to change sleeping positions. 7cm of Kloudcell provides pressure relief without the “stuck in the mattress” feel. CertiPUR-US certified (no harmful chemicals).

Koala Mattress sits at medium-firm (~6.5/10) on the softer side, and firm (~7.5/10) on the flipped side. Most people start on the medium-firm side and stay there — it’s the more versatile setting. The Kloudcell foam is noticeably different from memory foam: it’s responsive and bouncy rather than slow-sinking. You don’t get that “stuck in the mattress” feeling. This makes it easier to change sleeping positions during the night.
For back sleepers: Good on both settings. Medium-firm provides balanced comfort; firm gives extra lumbar support. For side sleepers: Good on medium-firm — adequate pressure relief at shoulders and hips. Not as plush as Emma, but sufficient for most. For stomach sleepers: Good on firm setting — prevents hip sinking. For couples: This is Koala’s strongest category. The zero disturbance foam is genuinely excellent — the viral wine glass test isn’t just marketing. Partner movement is absorbed by the foam so the other person barely feels it.
