Of the twelve brands we review, three are actually manufactured in Australia. The others are Australian companies — which is not the same claim. Here is the difference, and who makes what.

“Australian owned”, “Australian designed” and “Australian made” are three different claims, and only the last one is about where your mattress was built. Most of the well-known bed-in-a-box brands in this country are Australian businesses. Far fewer of them run an Australian factory, and a good number never say either way.
That matters legally as well as practically. Country-of-origin statements are representations under Australian Consumer Law, and a “made in Australia” claim requires the goods to have been substantially transformed here — it is not a marketing adjective a brand can apply to a mattress shipped in finished. Which is exactly why the brands that do manufacture here say so loudly, and the ones that do not tend to talk about being “an Australian brand” instead.

What makes it Australian made
Sleep Firm states it is “proudly Australian made, crafted in Melbourne by Chiropedic — a family-owned business with over 30 years of local manufacturing expertise”, and its specification sheet lists “Made In: Melbourne”. That is the strongest version of this claim on the page: not a brand that commissioned a factory, but a mattress built by an established manufacturer that puts its own name to it. The mattress is endorsed by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, scores 9.4 for edge support in our review — the highest we have recorded — and comes with 150 nights to decide and a 15-year warranty.
The honest trade-off: Sleep Firm is a genuine 9 out of 10 for firmness, and that is the whole product. If you sleep on your side it will press on your shoulder and hip rather than let them settle, and no amount of Australian manufacturing fixes that. Cooling is its weakest sub-score at 8.4, and the spring count is roughly 900 in a Queen where some rivals run twice that — though in a build this firm, spring tension and foam density carry more of the load than raw coil count does.

What makes it Australian made
Yinahla says each mattress is “handcrafted to order in Melbourne”, from “our long-established Melbourne factory”, and describes itself as “proudly Australian Made”. Made to order is the part worth noticing — nothing sits compressed in a warehouse for months. It carries the Australian Spinal Research Foundation endorsement, won Bedbuyer’s Best Back Care Mattress 2026, and its zoned pocket springs firm up under the hips and soften at the shoulders, which is the feature that matters most if you carry more weight or wake up sore. The warranty runs 20 years — the longest of any brand on this site — with a 150-night trial.
The honest trade-off: price. Yinahla scores 6.8 for value in our review — the lowest value score we have given any mattress, because it costs several times what the other two on this page do. A 20-year warranty is a manufacturer betting on its own build, and made-to-order construction is genuinely different from mass production; but you pay for both up front, and for a lot of buyers that money is better kept. If the appeal is Australian manufacture rather than the premium build, Sleep Firm and Luxara qualify on the same test for considerably less.

Luxara describes its mattresses as “individually handmade in Australia using only the highest quality, consciously sourced & eco-friendly materials”, with GECA-certified foams. The build is two spring systems rather than one — 1,280 micro pocket springs in the comfort layer over 740 main coils in five zones, 2,020 in total, the highest count of any mattress we review. The honest trade-off: the guarantees are the shortest of the three. Ten years of warranty against Sleep Firm’s fifteen and Yinahla’s twenty, and 100 nights of trial against 150. That is not a small difference when the failure you are protecting against is gradual sag over years rather than a fault in the first month. Two of these three are the same company. Yinahla and Sleep Firm are not rivals — both are brands of Sleep Collective, an Australian group that also owns Chiropedic, the Melbourne manufacturer Sleep Firm names as its maker, and whose factory is in Braybrook, Victoria. So two of the three mattresses on this page come out of one business and, in all likelihood, one building. Both stay on the list because both genuinely meet the test at the top, and because a group that owns its factory is exactly the kind of company that can make this claim. But you are choosing between two products from one maker and one from another, and you should know that before you decide.
On the order. Yinahla and Luxara both score 9.1 out of 10 in our reviews — a genuine tie, listed warranty-first rather than because one beats the other. Yinahla is the stronger back-care mattress; Luxara is the better-built one for the money, and the only one of the three from an independent maker. Sleep Firm leads on its overall score, not on being more Australian than the other two.
The Distinction
Australian brand is not Australian made
Most of the best-known mattress companies in this country are Australian businesses that build their mattresses somewhere else. That is not an accusation — plenty of excellent mattresses are manufactured overseas. It just means they answer a different question from the one this page asks.
Sleep Republic is the sharpest illustration of the distinction, because it sits in the same group as two of the three mattresses above and gives a different answer. Its terms place it inside Sleep Collective, alongside Yinahla, Sleep Firm and Chiropedic — the Melbourne manufacturer that builds them. Sleep Republic is designed in Melbourne and manufactured in China, and the brand states it openly rather than sheltering behind “Australian owned”. One group, one head office in Braybrook, two different answers to “where is it made”. If you want a single example of why the two phrases cannot be used interchangeably, that is it.
None of which is a mark against the mattress. Sleep Republic is one of the highest-scoring beds we review, its foams carry CertiPUR-US certification, and the company describes independent third-party inspection during production runs. Where a mattress is assembled is a fact about a supply chain, not a verdict on how it sleeps.

What the label actually means
- “Australian Made” with the green-and-gold kangaroo is a licensed certification mark administered by Australian Made Campaign Limited. A brand has to apply and qualify to use it.
- “Made in Australia” as a plain claim is governed by Australian Consumer Law and requires the goods to have been substantially transformed here.
- “Australian owned”, “Australian designed”, “an Australian brand” are claims about the company, not the factory. All three can be entirely true of a mattress built overseas.
- Australian made does not mean Australian materials. Springs, foams and fabrics are traded globally; what is being claimed is where the mattress was assembled.
- The practical benefit is service, not quality. A local manufacturer is easier to hold to a warranty, replacement parts and comfort-layer swaps are simpler, and a factory you can drive to answers the phone differently from one eleven time zones away.

Is an Australian made mattress better?
Not automatically, and it would be dishonest to tell you otherwise. Where a mattress is assembled says nothing on its own about spring count, foam density or how it will feel in year five. What Australian manufacture reliably buys you is a shorter, simpler line back to whoever built it if something goes wrong — and, in the case of the three above, manufacturers confident enough to put a 10, 15 or 20-year warranty behind their own work.
Which is the cheapest Australian made mattress you review?
Sleep Firm, by a clear margin, and it is also the highest-scoring of the three. Luxara sits in the middle and runs a standing reader discount. Yinahla is a premium product several times the price of either — its value sub-score of 6.8 is the lowest we have given any mattress, and that is the number to weigh against its 20-year warranty.
Is Sleep Republic Australian made?
No, and the brand is straightforward about it: designed in Melbourne, manufactured in China. What makes that worth knowing is where Sleep Republic sits — inside Sleep Collective, the same Australian group as Yinahla and Sleep Firm, both of which are built in the group’s own Melbourne factory. One company, two manufacturing answers. It is one of the highest-scoring mattresses we review and we recommend it in several other guides; it simply is not what this page is about.
Why are there only three mattresses on this list?
Because three is how many qualify among the brands we review. Padding the list with Australian companies that manufacture elsewhere would make the page longer and the answer worse. If we add another genuinely Australian-made brand to the site, it will appear here.
Does Australian made cost more?
Usually, though not always by as much as people expect — Sleep Firm sits well under the price of several imported bed-in-a-box mattresses we review. Local labour and shorter production runs cost more per unit; what you are buying alongside the mattress is a warranty that is straightforward to claim on.
