Protect-A-Bed says they can neither get in nor get out

Certified fabric

Sleep Republic Tencel Mattress Protector

Queen: $172 was $229 · checked 27 October 2026

Waterproof
Called waterproof by Sleep Republic, though its description says “spills and light moisture”; a “miracle layer”, material not named
Fits
“Standard and extra deep” mattresses; no height in centimetres

Good to know: no depth figure and no warranty are published for the protector itself, and no returns policy covers one bought on its own.

60°C, tumble dry low; rated by Bedding Co for 200+ washes, with a 2-year warranty
Fits
Queen skirt 50cm deep (40–60cm by size)

Good to know: once used or washed it cannot go back, and non-members pay delivery on orders under $150, which a Queen on its own does not reach.

Luxara Waterproof Mattress Protector
Lowest regular price

Luxara Waterproof Mattress Protector

Queen: $99 checked 27 October 2026

Price
The lowest Queen list price of the 15 we compared on 22 October 2026, delivered free
Fabric
Bamboo blend over a micro-perforated waterproof barrier; materials not named
Fits
Mattresses up to 40cm

Good to know: a cold wash only, no drying instructions and a 1-year warranty, and Bedding Co’s Cotton was cheaper on sale that day, before delivery.

Peace Lily organic cotton Mattress Protector
Natural cotton, no plastic layer

Peace Lily Mattress Protector

Queen: $309 checked 27 October 2026

Fabric
Organic cotton over organic cotton wadding; no polyurethane
Waterproof
No. Peace Lily says it takes sweat and minor accidents, not larger spills
Fits
46cm pocket, sized for its own 21cm mattress plus a 6cm topper

Good to know: a spill can reach the mattress, and the protector cannot be returned, because Peace Lily excludes it from its 100-night trial.

How to choose

  • Match the depth to your mattress. Measure at the edge, from the base to the highest point of the top, including any pillow top and any topper you use, and pick a protector whose published depth clears it.
  • Read the waterproof wording. Protect-A-Bed’s pages, the Allerzip’s and the Signature’s included, carry “100% Waterproof” headings over descriptions of moderate spills and stains, and Sleep Republic’s description says “spills and light moisture”. For a child’s bed or a pet, choose one the brand calls waterproof without qualification.
  • Care. Wash it before first use and deal with a spill the same day. If you claim on a Protect-A-Bed warranty, do not clean the mattress beyond wiping away the soiling: Protect-A-Bed says more than that voids its warranties.

Why bother

At most of the 12 mattress brands we cover, a stained mattress cannot go back under the trial, and stains are not covered by the warranty (trial terms as we read them on 7 October 2026, warranty wording on 22 October). A waterproof protector is one of the cheapest ways to keep that refund and that warranty intact. The full terms, brand by brand, are in our mattress trials and warranties guide.

Common questions

What is the difference between a protector and a topper?

A protector is a thin cover that keeps sweat, spills and dust out of the mattress; it is not designed to change the feel. A topper is a thicker layer whose whole job is changing the feel. If you use both, the protector goes over the topper, so measure the two together.

Will a waterproof protector make me sleep hot?

The brands say theirs breathe: Protect-A-Bed calls its barrier vapour porous, and Luxara uses micro-perforations. None publishes a measurement. Peace Lily’s has no plastic layer at all, but it is not waterproof.

Can I return a mattress protector?

Usually not once you have used it. Bedding Co and Protect-A-Bed take back only unused items in original packaging, Peace Lily excludes its protector from its trial, and Sleep Republic publishes no returns rule for one bought on its own. Luxara advertises 30-day free returns without stating conditions, so ask Luxara before you open it. Faulty goods are different: your Australian Consumer Law rights apply whatever the store’s policy.

Does a protector help with dust-mite allergies?

Sleep Republic, Luxara, Bedding Co and Protect-A-Bed all claim protection against dust mites. A fitted protector covers the top; a zip-up encasement such as the Allerzip encloses the whole mattress. Sleep Republic says its protector is approved by the National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice program, and Protect-A-Bed says it works with that program. If an allergy is severe, ask your GP or allergist.

Affiliate disclosure: Sleep Republic, Bedding Co, Peace Lily and Luxara are our affiliate partners and may pay us a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. That is why only their cards carry a Check Price button; Protect-A-Bed pays us nothing, and its cards carry no link. Commission decided no pick: each is matched to a need on the brand’s published specs, and four of the six are from partners. We read nine more protectors and left them out to keep this page short. Specifications read 22 October 2026. Last updated October 2026.
