Best Kids Mattress Australia
A child’s mattress has to suit a body that keeps changing. Here are the kids and cot mattresses from the brands we work with: what each is built from, who it suits, and what to check before you buy.
For most children from about three, start with the Sleep Republic Kids Mattress: five-zone pocket springs under a natural latex layer, a medium 5/10 feel, a 150-night trial and a 10-year warranty. If you would rather have one mattress that changes with them, the Luxara Kids Flip has a softer side for ages 3–7 and a firmer side for 8–12, and is handmade in Australia. If your child prefers a firmer bed, the Eco Kids Mattress is medium/firm, hand-assembled in Melbourne and comes with a 150-night trial, and for a top bunk its 14.5cm Eco Kids Bunk Mattress is the low-profile option. For a baby, the Peace Lily Cot Mattress is natural latex with a firm infant side and a softer toddler side, firmness-tested to the Australian standard for infant sleep surfaces.
What matters in a kids mattress
- A medium feel, not a soft one. A child weighs a fraction of an adult, so a mattress feels firmer to them than it does to you. That is why kids mattresses sit around medium. Babies are the exception: a cot mattress should be firm and flat.
- Certifications you can check. “Low-tox” and “non-toxic” are marketing words. OEKO-TEX, CertiPUR-US, Sensitive Choice, GECA and Global GreenTag are certifications with published criteria, and each pick below says which it carries. The FAQ explains what each one means.
- The right size for the next few years. A King Single is 15cm longer than a Single (203cm against 188cm), which is the difference between a mattress that lasts into the teens and one that does not.
- Height, if it is going on a bunk. The Sleep Republic and Luxara mattresses here are 28cm tall and the standard Eco Kids 21–22cm. A top bunk’s label gives the maximum mattress thickness for its guard rail, and most are built for something thinner, which is what the 14.5cm Eco Kids Bunk Mattress is for.
- A trial long enough to tell. Children take a few weeks to settle on a new bed. The trials here run 100 to 150 nights.
The best kids mattresses in Australia

Sleep Republic Kids Mattress
What it is built from
A cover of cashmere, organic cotton and polyester, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Under it sit two quilted layers of CertiPUR-US certified foam, a natural latex comfort layer, and a five-zone pocket spring unit with edge support. Sleep Republic rates the feel 5/10, “balanced medium”, and says it suits children from toddlers to teens.
Why it is a good fit
Individually wrapped springs in five zones give a growing child support that moves with them, and latex on top cushions without the deep sink of memory foam. Its 150-night trial, matched by Eco Kids, is the longest here.

Luxara Kids Flip Mattress
What it is built from
Two sleeping sides. The side for ages 3–7 has an extra layer of Dunlop foam for a softer feel; the side for ages 8–12 is more tightly quilted and firmer, so you flip it as your child grows. Both sides have a bamboo cover, a layer of Australian wool and Australian-made Dunlop foam over a five-zone, triple-tempered innerspring with double edge supports. The foams are GECA certified and the mattress is Sensitive Choice approved. It is handmade to order in Australia.
Why it is a good fit
It is the only kids bed mattress here built to change with a child: one mattress covers the years from three to twelve, where a single-sided mattress is chosen once. For families who want it made in Australia, Luxara is one of two brands here that say so; Eco Kids is the other.

Eco Kids Mattress
What it is built from
A bamboo lyocell cover certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, over channel-quilted natural cotton. Its foams are Hygroflex, which also carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and a Dunlop comfort layer; Eco Kids says its foams are GECA or Global GreenTag certified, and lists approval under the National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice program. Underneath is its Chiro Flex ES spring unit with Maxi-Boost edge support. Eco Kids describes the feel as medium/firm, recommends the mattress for children from two into their teens, and says each one is hand-assembled in its own factory in Melbourne.
Why it is a good fit
It suits a child who finds a medium mattress too soft: Eco Kids calls it medium/firm, where Sleep Republic rates its kids mattress 5/10. It is one of two brands here whose kids mattresses are made in Australia, alongside Luxara, and its 150-night trial matches Sleep Republic’s as the longest here. Eco Kids rates it for a sleeper of up to 120kg, so it can stay in use into the teens.

Eco Kids Bunk Mattress
What it is built from
A low-profile version of the Eco Kids build, 14.5cm tall. A bamboo lyocell cover certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 sits over channel-quilted natural cotton, Hygroflex foam (Global GreenTag and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified) and a Dunlop comfort layer that Eco Kids lists as GECA certified and Sensitive Choice approved. Under them is the same Chiro Flex ES spring unit with Maxi-Boost edge support. Like the full-height mattress, it is hand-assembled in Melbourne.
Why it is a good fit
A top bunk needs a thin mattress so the guard rail stays well above the child, and at 14.5cm this is about half the height of the Sleep Republic and Luxara mattresses. Eco Kids says it works with standard bunk rails and suits children from early school age to their teens, and suggests it for trundles too. It keeps the 150-night trial and 10-year warranty of the full-height mattress.
The cot mattress

Peace Lily Cot Mattress
What it is built from
Two 5cm layers of natural latex: a firm side for infants and a medium-firm side for toddlers, so you flip it when your child is ready. The cover is three layers of certified organic cotton, bonded to the latex so the surface stays taut and flat. There are no springs, no polyurethane or memory foam, and no chemical flame retardants. Peace Lily says it is firmness-tested to AS/NZS 8811.1:2013, the Australian and New Zealand test for infant sleep surfaces.
Why it is a good fit
A firm, flat surface is the whole job of a cot mattress, and this one is made for it from a single material, with a second side that takes a child through the toddler years. It measures 130 × 69 × 10cm, the standard Australian cot size.

Single or King Single?
The Sleep Republic, Luxara and standard Eco Kids mattresses all come in Single (92 × 188cm), King Single (about 107 × 203cm) and Double (about 137 × 188cm); the Eco Kids Bunk comes in Single and King Single only. A Single suits a young child and a small room. A King Single is wider and, more to the point, 15cm longer, which is what a teenager needs; if the room takes it, it is the size that lasts. Whichever you choose, check the bed frame’s inside measurements first, because kids frames vary more than adult ones.
Kids mattresses: common questions
What firmness is best for a child?
Medium, for most children. A child weighs a fraction of an adult, so a mattress you would call medium feels firmer to them, which is why the kids mattresses here sit around medium: Sleep Republic at 5/10, Luxara with a softer side for younger children and a firmer one from about eight, and Eco Kids a little firmer at medium/firm. Babies are the exception: a cot mattress should be firm and flat.
When should my child move from a cot to a bed?
There is no fixed age. Most children move somewhere between about two and three, often once they start trying to climb out of the cot. The Peace Lily cot mattress’s toddler side covers the stretch before that move, and Eco Kids recommends its kids mattress from age two.
Can a child just use an adult mattress?
Yes, once they are in a bed. A good adult mattress in a Single or King Single works, and is the better buy for an older teenager. Kids mattresses are designed around a lighter body and cost less than the adult models from the same brands.
What do the certifications mean?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: the fabric has been tested for a list of harmful substances. CertiPUR-US: the polyurethane foam has been tested for content, emissions and durability. Sensitive Choice: the National Asthma Council Australia’s program for products that may suit people with asthma and allergies. GECA: Good Environmental Choice Australia, an environmental and health certification. Global GreenTag: an Australian ecolabel that certifies products against environmental and health criteria. AS/NZS 8811.1:2013: the Australian and New Zealand test method for the firmness of infant sleep surfaces, which is what a cot mattress should meet.
Will a kids mattress fit a bunk bed?
Usually not on the top bunk. The guard rail on a bunk is sized for a thinner mattress, and the bunk’s label gives the maximum mattress thickness. The Sleep Republic and Luxara mattresses are 28cm tall and the standard Eco Kids 21–22cm, so check that label before you order one for a top bunk. The Eco Kids Bunk Mattress is 14.5cm and made for the job; Eco Kids says it works with standard bunk rails, but the label is still the figure to go by.
How long does a kids mattress last?
Every mattress here carries a 10-year warranty, which covers most of a childhood. Luxara’s two sides are designed to run from age three to twelve; Sleep Republic’s single-sided mattress is described as suiting toddlers to teens, and Eco Kids recommends its mattress from age two into the teens. Rotate any of them head to foot regularly; Sleep Republic and Eco Kids suggest monthly.
Does a kids mattress need a protector?
Yes. A waterproof protector is the cheapest insurance against spills and accidents, and it protects the trial as well as the mattress: Sleep Republic takes returns only if the mattress is clean and unstained, Luxara’s terms rule out odours and pets, and Eco Kids wants it back as new, with no stains or marks, in its original plastic bag.
