Best Mattress for Back Sleepers Australia
Back sleeping is the easiest position on the spine to get right, and the easiest to get wrong with the wrong firmness. Five medium-firm mattresses, ranked on support and firmness, with the maths shown.
Lying on your back spreads your weight over a larger area than any other position, which is why it is often called the kindest position for the spine. But it asks one specific thing of a mattress: to hold up the heaviest part of you, your hips, while filling the natural curve of your lower back.
Too firm, and a gap opens under that curve which your back muscles spend the night bridging. Too soft, and the hips sink below the shoulders and the spine settles into a shallow U. Both show up the same way: stiffness in the lower back when you get up.
That puts back sleepers in a narrower band than most people expect: medium-firm, roughly 6.5 to 7.5 out of 10. Not the firmest mattress you can find, and not the plushest.
How These Five Were Chosen
Back Sleeper Fit is the average of two numbers. Support is the support score from our own review of each mattress. Firmness fit is 10 for anything inside the 6.5 to 7.5 medium-firm band, and loses 2 points for every point outside it. Ties break on the number of spring zones, because zoning is what lets a mattress firm up under the hips and give at the lower back. Every input is published on our review pages.
| Rank | Mattress | Support | Firmness | Firmness fit | Back Sleeper Fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Yinahla Premier Luxe | 9.7 | Medium-firm* | 10 | 9.9 |
| =2 | Luxara Platinum | 9.5 | ~7 / 10 | 10 | 9.8 |
| =2 | Sleep Republic | 9.5 | ~6.5 / 10 | 10 | 9.8 |
| #4 | Sleeping Duck | 9.0 | Adjustable, ~7.5 on Firm | 10 | 9.5 |
| #5 | Origin Hybrid | 8.8 | 7–8 / 10 | 10 | 9.4 |
* Yinahla classifies the Premier Luxe as medium-firm; it does not publish a number out of 10. Luxara and Sleep Republic tie exactly on both inputs and share second place, listed alphabetically. Origin ties at 9.4 with the Sleep Republic ES and Peace Lily, and takes fifth on its seven spring zones against their three.
Five Mattresses That Suit Back Sleepers
Nine spring zones are the most of any mattress we cover. The springs firm up under the hips and give slightly at the lumbar curve, which is exactly the job described above. Yinahla describes it as medium-firm, inside the band, and its 9.7 support score is among the highest in our reviews. It is rated for sleepers up to 200kg.
Two layers of springs, 1,280 micro coils over 740 main coils zoned in five, under a 10cm pillow top. The pillow top lets the lower back settle into the surface while the coils keep the hips level. Our review and Bedbuyer’s panel both put it at 7 out of 10, the middle of the band, and its 9.5 support score ties with Sleep Republic.
$100 off any Luxara mattress BESTMATTRESS100
1,850 pocket springs across five zones, at 6.5 out of 10, the lower edge of the band, which suits back sleepers of average and lighter build. Its 9.5 support score ties with Luxara, it is endorsed by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, and its 4.8 rating comes from 2,157 ProductReview owners, the biggest evidence base in this top five.
Interchangeable foam pads let you set the firmness in zones: firmer under the hips, softer where the lower back meets the mattress. It is the back sleeper’s problem solved by hand rather than by spring design. On its Firm setting it sits around 7.5 out of 10, inside the band, and each side of the bed can be set differently.
Seven spring zones, more than any pick here except Yinahla, at 7 to 8 out of 10, the firm end of the band. That firmer feel holds heavier hips up well, and its 8.8 support score is solid. It is by a wide margin the cheapest mattress in this top five.
What to Look For as a Back Sleeper
- Medium-firm, 6.5 to 7.5 out of 10: the band where both the research and the anatomy point. Firmer leaves a gap under the lower back; softer lets the hips sink
- Zoned support: springs that are firmer under the hips than under the shoulders and lower back keep the spine level without you having to find a compromise firmness
- Adjust for your weight: under about 60kg, aim for the soft end of the band. Over about 100kg, the firm end or a little above; see our heavy person guide
- A lower pillow: back sleepers need a flatter pillow than side sleepers, so the head is not pushed forward. A mattress that is right can still feel wrong under a pillow that is too high
- The longest trial you can get: a back takes weeks, not nights, to settle on a new surface. Everything above gives you at least 100 nights
The Near Misses, and Why
Sleep Republic ES and Peace Lily both score 9.4, level with Origin, and miss the top five only on the tiebreak: three spring zones each against Origin’s seven. Both are good choices for a back sleeper. The ES is $1,008 for a Queen at 7 out of 10, and Peace Lily is $1,199 with certified organic cotton and natural latex over its springs.
Sleep Firm has the highest support score we give any mattress, 9.8, and it is second on our back pain list. For most back sleepers it is simply too firm: at 9 out of 10 its firmness fit is 7, which brings it to 8.4 here. If you weigh over about 100kg and like a hard surface, our firm mattress guide is the better place to start.
Sleep Republic LUXE is plusher than the standard model, and our own LUXE review sends back and stomach sleepers who want firmer support to the standard Sleep Republic instead.
Emma is soft for a back sleeper at 5.5 to 6 out of 10, with a support score of 7.5, which brings it to 8.0. Ergoflex has the lowest support score we give, 6.5, and a 30-night trial against the 100 to 150 above.
