Quick Verdict

Koala is Australia’s best-selling mattress for a reason — it does most things well without being the best at any single thing. The flippable Kloudcell comfort layer gives you medium-firm or firm options, the “zero disturbance” foam genuinely isolates partner movement, and the 4-hour metro delivery is the fastest in Australia. Add B-Corp certification, 1% for the Planet membership, and $4.9M+ donated to koala conservation, and you have a brand that’s easy to support. The trade-offs: it’s all-foam (no springs), edge support is average, it’s not the coolest sleeper, and at $1,249 Queen it’s not the cheapest option. But as a reliable, well-rounded all-rounder that’s easy to buy and easy to live with, Koala earned its popularity.

BEST FOR: Couples, all-rounder seekers, eco-conscious buyers, people who want fast delivery

Who Is Koala?

Koala launched in 2015 in Sydney and became a household name almost overnight after their viral wine glass test video — someone jumped onto a Koala mattress next to a full glass of wine, and the wine didn’t spill. It demonstrated the mattress’s motion isolation and launched a brand that now has 50,000+ five-star reviews and is one of Australia’s most recognised consumer brands. Koala is a certified B-Corp (meeting rigorous social and environmental standards) and donates 1% of revenue to environmental causes through 1% for the Planet. They’ve donated over $4.9 million to koala and wildlife conservation.

Their current mattress range includes the SE (entry, ~$950 Queen), Koala Mattress (mid-range, this review, $1,249 Queen), Plus (advanced cooling, ~$1,490 Queen), Polar+ (ultimate cooling), and Luxe (premium, ~$1,990 Queen). They also sell bed frames, sofa beds, furniture, and bedding. This review covers the flagship Koala Mattress — the one that made them famous.

What’s Inside the Koala Mattress?
Flippable Comfort Layer (The Signature Feature)

This is what makes Koala unique among its price competitors. The top comfort layer can be flipped to choose between medium-firm (softer side up) or firm (firmer side up). It takes about 5 minutes — unzip the cover, flip the layer, zip back up. This gives you 2 firmness options in one mattress. Not as granular as Ecosa (3 settings) or Sleeping Duck (5+), but simpler and quicker to adjust.

Kloudcell® Comfort Foam

Koala’s proprietary foam technology. Unlike memory foam (slow-sinking), Kloudcell is responsive — it bounces back quickly, making it easy to change sleeping positions. 7cm of Kloudcell provides pressure relief without the “stuck in the mattress” feel. CertiPUR-US certified (no harmful chemicals).

CoolThread™ Cover

A cooling yarn cover designed to feel cool to the touch and wick moisture. It helps with initial heat dissipation, though the all-foam construction still retains more heat than hybrid mattresses. Not removable for washing — a drawback compared to Ecosa, Emma, and Sleeping Duck.

5-Zone Support Base

High-density foam base with 5 support zones — firmer under the hips and lumbar, softer at the shoulders. This is the layer responsible for spinal alignment and preventing sagging over time. Provides the structural foundation for the mattress’s 10-year warranty.

How Does It Feel?

Koala Mattress sits at medium-firm (~6.5/10) on the softer side, and firm (~7.5/10) on the flipped side. Most people start on the medium-firm side and stay there — it’s the more versatile setting. The Kloudcell foam is noticeably different from memory foam: it’s responsive and bouncy rather than slow-sinking. You don’t get that “stuck in the mattress” feeling. This makes it easier to change sleeping positions during the night.

For back sleepers: Good on both settings. Medium-firm provides balanced comfort; firm gives extra lumbar support. For side sleepers: Good on medium-firm — adequate pressure relief at shoulders and hips. Not as plush as Emma, but sufficient for most. For stomach sleepers: Good on firm setting — prevents hip sinking. For couples: This is Koala’s strongest category. The zero disturbance foam is genuinely excellent — the viral wine glass test isn’t just marketing. Partner movement is absorbed by the foam so the other person barely feels it.

How Koala Compares
Koala vs Emma
Australia’s biggest rivalry
Koala ($1,249) is firmer, has flippable firmness, faster delivery (4hr vs 48hr), and better brand recognition. Emma (~$559 on sale) is cheaper, softer, cooler (Airgocell), and has a longer trial (150 vs 120 nights). Koala has a non-removable cover; Emma’s is washable.
Choose Koala if: You want firmness options, fast delivery, and eco credentials.
Choose Emma if: You sleep hot, want softer feel, or budget is tight.

Koala vs Ecosa
Adjustability showdown
Both offer adjustable firmness but Ecosa has 3 settings vs Koala’s 2. Ecosa has a 15-year warranty (vs 10), waterproof inner cover, and B-Corp certification. Koala has faster delivery (4hr vs next-day), a washable-cover Ecosa has but Koala doesn’t. Ecosa costs slightly less ($1,170 vs $1,249).
Choose Koala if: You want fastest delivery and trust the most-reviewed brand.
Choose Ecosa if: You want more firmness options and longer warranty.

Koala vs Sleeping Duck
Popular vs Premium
Both are popular Australian brands but different tiers. Koala ($1,249) is all-foam with 2 firmness settings. Sleeping Duck ($1,649) is hybrid with 5+ firmness settings, half-half for couples, and a washable cover. Koala is simpler and cheaper; Sleeping Duck gives far more customisation.
Choose Koala if: You want simplicity, speed, and a lower price.
Choose Sleeping Duck if: You want maximum customisation and a hybrid feel.

Koala vs Origin
Popular vs Budget
Origin (~$599 on sale) is less than half the price with 7-zone pocket springs, Australian wool, and a 15-year warranty. Koala ($1,249) has faster delivery, flippable firmness, stronger brand, and B-Corp certification. Origin is firmer and has springs; Koala is softer and all-foam.
Choose Koala if: You want brand trust, fast delivery, and softer feel.
Choose Origin if: Budget is priority and you want firm hybrid support.

The gap in Koala’s line-up
Koala vs Sleep Republic
EDGE SUPPORT
Koala is all-foam, and that is why it’s quiet, quick to deliver and easy to live with. It’s also why edge support and cooling are the two things owners raise most often — both are what foam is worst at.
A pocket-spring hybrid fixes exactly those two things. Sleep Republic has 1,850 individually wrapped springs, a reinforced perimeter so you can sit on the edge, and 150 nights to decide against Koala’s 120.
Still buy Koala if: you want it this week. Same-day metro delivery is real, and nobody else here matches it.
FAQ
Is Koala Mattress good for back pain?
Decent for mild back pain — the 5-zone support base provides targeted lumbar support, especially on the firm setting. For serious or chronic back pain, a hybrid mattress like Sleep Republic (Spinal Foundation endorsed) or Ergoflex (orthopaedic memory foam) would be more effective. Koala is a good all-rounder but not a specialist back pain mattress.
How does the 4-hour delivery work?
Order before a certain cutoff time in metro Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, or Adelaide, and Koala delivers within 4 hours. You select a delivery window at checkout. The mattress arrives compressed in a box — unbox, unroll, and it expands within a few hours. This is the fastest mattress delivery in Australia by a significant margin.
Is Koala better than Ecosa?
Different strengths. Koala has faster delivery (4hr vs next-day), stronger brand recognition, and responsive Kloudcell foam. Ecosa has more firmness options (3 vs 2), longer warranty (15 vs 10 years), waterproof inner cover, and B-Corp certification. For speed and simplicity, Koala. For flexibility and warranty, Ecosa.
Why can’t I wash the Koala cover?
The CoolThread cover is not designed to be removed or machine washed — a genuine drawback compared to Emma, Ecosa, Sleeping Duck, and OneBed which all have removable, washable covers. Koala recommends using a mattress protector (sold separately) to keep the mattress clean. Use a protector from day one.
Is Koala Australian-made?
Koala is an Australian-founded and Australian-headquartered company (Sydney). Their foams are CertiPUR-US certified. Manufacturing details vary by product — it’s not fully Australian-made in the way Luxara is. The brand is strongly Australian in identity, operations, and values (B-Corp, koala conservation), but the mattress manufacturing itself isn’t solely domestic.
What’s the difference between Koala and Koala Plus?
Koala ($1,249 Queen) is the mid-range with Kloudcell foam and flippable firmness. Koala Plus ($1,490 Queen) adds advanced cooling tech (CoolThread, semi-liquid cooling beads), a seasonal double-sided topper (summer/winter sides), and 8cm of Kloudcell. If cooling matters, Plus is worth the $240 upgrade. For most people, the standard Koala is sufficient.
